The public hospital system in the country is in serious trouble, unable to provide good services and immediate care to those in need. It calls for urgent reforms so that public hospitals will be able to give medical attention to those in need. Just recently, Medibank Private announced that they will opening clinic that will charge patients. This comes from the many complaints received by the hospitals regarding their poor and delayed service.
Many people have shared a common experience in seeking medical care from public hospitals. They are asked to wait for hours before getting the care that they need. This does not bode well for the public hospital system where immediate attention should be part of the service. However, you may now have the option to receive immediate care within an hour of your arrival. You can do this by paying extra.
For private health fund members, you need to pay a high price of $150 per consultation while non-members will be charged with $190. These prices seem too expensive for the average citizen. The question now is who can afford this? Medical care can actually be expensive, which is why we are constantly reminded that “health is wealth”. We need to take care of our bodies and invest in health care insurance for those times when we get sick. However, the problem is that most patients have already paid for their medical service. This comes through the taxes, the Medicare levy and the skyrocketing health insurance premiums. This additional expense seems unjust and unreasonable.
